Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I never imagined that one day I would live in Paris. But that’s exactly what happened after I married a French man. Paris is also where I spent most of my first pregnancy (yes, a very tasty one).
I wasn’t the type that had spent much time with babies, so as my due date approached, I found myself totally clueless about what to prepare for the arrival of our son. I hadn’t yet settled into a life in France so unlike many women, I actually had a lot of time to research baby stuff and build a thoughtful registry. My purchasing premise:
1. Will baby or I really need this?
2. Is this the best product from all similar ones?
Thankfully my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, who between them had given birth to 10 children, also jumped in to help. They offered to prepare my hospital bag or what they call in France a Sac de Maternité. It wasn’t long before my due date that they arrived to my home with a suitcase of newborn baby clothes, blankets, and other essentials for the baby’s first weeks of life. Everything had been pre-washed, expertly folded and unpacked into a designated closet. Superstition says it’s best not to over-prepare before the birth and so I didn’t spend much time looking over the items, but just from the motif and way these tiny pieces had been neatly folded and from the baby fresh scent emitting from this closet, it was hard not to get excited.
In January 2018, I gave birth at the American Hospital of Paris to baby Raphaël. Besides the indescribable emotion of welcoming a child into the world, the experience was heightened by the beauty of not only the city of Paris, but also by the delicious little wardrobe of my son. It was so reassuring to me to know I had the most practical, beautiful, and necessary items ready for my baby. And it made me so happy that he was enveloped in beauty from his very first breath.
Not everyone has a mother-in-law or other family member with enough baby experience and creativity to prepare an ensemble for baby’s arrival. Many other women just don’t have the time, don’t know where to begin, or due to superstition, don’t want to take on the task of buying things beforehand themselves. Furthermore, the American baby market simply doesn’t have the same selection of beautiful and high-quality products that I’ve found in France.
This is what inspired me to launch Raphaël Paris, named after my son Raphaël, whereby we offer the most exclusive and luxurious French baby products and newborn gift boxes and ship them to you. It delights me to offer other expectant parents a curated luxury baby ensemble so they too can feel the excitement that I felt emanating from Raphaël’s closet.
I’ve already done the research: what is practical, what is beautiful, and what is necessary.
What more, each baby box comes with that certain “je ne sais quoi‘ that can only be found in Paris … nothing extra.
